AGHS Athletics Update 9/11/2020

 

AGHS Athletics Families,

 

We are getting closer & closer to launching our RTA program on Monday, October, 5th! We couldn't be happier to get started in just over one week. Our coaches have been working hard in preparation and we are all so excited to see you!

 

Please visit our WEBSITE to view the RTA PACKET, watch the RTA VIDEO, sign & submit the RTA WAIVER & RTA Protocol Agreement Form to the AGHS office. Hard copies of the RTA packets are available in the AGHS front office for pick up. All LMUSD Athletics participants Must have the following RTA requirements prior to participation: 

 

  • LMUSD RTA Waiver 
  • RTA Protocol Agreement Form
  • FamilyID Registration 
  • Current Physical on file
  • Individual Water Bottle

 

Below are some points of emphasis for your family to consider regarding the RTA program:

 

  • Optional - Participation is a family decision.

 

  • RTA conditioning period is NOT part of a regular season nor are they tryouts.

 

  • An RTA participant (student or coach) can only participate in a single cohort. This means you will only be able to participate with one team.
    • We recommend that you participate with the sport that starts first.

 

  •  All Athletic Clearance Requirements must be submitted to the athletic dept by Friday, 10/2 by 3pm in order to participate on Monday, 10/5. Starting on Tuesday, 10/6 all clearance forms will be processed as quickly as possible on a daily basis.

 

  • Contact your coaches if you plan to participate even if you will not be cleared by 10/5 so we can account for everyone in our planning.

AGHS Athletics Update 8/21/2020

AGHS Athletics Families,

 

Please see the below statement from LMUSD in regards to our current status of return to athletic activities.

 

AGHS and NHS Athletic Directors met with LMUSD District Leadership yesterday to discuss the possibility of bringing limited athletic conditioning on to campuses this fall. Mapping backward from CIF’s stated earliest competition as being December 28, we believe early October would be the best time to begin conditioning. The district is supportive of exploring the concept, but there are many steps necessary before this can be implemented. We understand your desire to begin the season; please know that all parties involved want what is best for our students. The district has promised to investigate all aspects of this and meet again with Athletic Directors in early September.

AGHS Athletics Update 7/21/2020

 

AGHS Athletics Families,

 

Monday morning, the CIF State Office released the athletics plan and calendar for the 2020-21 school year.  You can find that calendar at the CIF State website.  The Lucia Mar Unified School District Board of Education, District Leadership, and School Site Administration remain committed to resume athletic activities as soon as state and local agencies deem it safe to return.  We all understand the benefits to students who participate in athletics and extracurricular activities.   

 

We are determined to be prepared to start, when we have the clearance to do so.  Your Athletic Department is currently at work on the following projects:

 

  • Rescheduling the 2020-2021 Athletic Calendar.
  • Rescheduling all of our sports schedules to match the new CIF calendar.
  • Training and professional development opportunities for our coaches.
  • Working with Boosters to plan out fundraising events to cover significant shortfalls we have already experienced this year.

 

What you can do, so your student athlete is ready.

  1. Complete the clearance process for your student-athlete(s).  
  • 2020-2021 Family ID Registration which can be found HERE
  • A Current Physical on file with the Athletic Dept in order to participate which can be found HERE
  • Email physicals to our Athletic Trainer matt.quijano@lmusd.org
  1. Encourage your student athlete(s) to stay active and workout in a safe and responsible manner.  
  2. Try to stay adaptive, flexible, patient, and positive as we all navigate through this together.  With the constant variance we have no choice but to continue to adjust, adapt, roll with the punches, and put our best foot forward.  We have a calendar from CIF and are hopeful to have seasons for our student athletes . . . Let’s stay positive and work towards that goal.  

Please see the information below regarding the CIF decision to have 2 seasons.

 

Why are there only two seasons (instead of 3 shortened seasons)? 

After much consideration, the decision was made to change from the traditional three-season format to a two-season format.  Trying to condense three seasons into six months did not provide as many opportunities as the two-season model.  The overlap between the seasons in a three-season model would have been very challenging for three sport athletes while also dramatically shortening the seasons for those students that only play one or two sports.  

 

What does that mean for us at AGHS?   

Some student athletes may feel the need to choose a sport and drop another.  We understand the desire to do so, however this is not always necessary. We always have and will continue to take PRIDE in being a school that encourages participation in multiple sports when applicable. We encourage and promote diversification for our students and student athletes alike and this will NOT change. We will approach this on a case by case basis as each set of variables provides its own set of obstacles. We will communicate, collaborate, and provide the best opportunity to make it work if possible.

 

The hardest part of making it work for our student athletes is going to be all of the various egos involved.  Egos of coaches, egos of the individual student athlete, egos of parents, and the individuals loved ones.  We are in unprecedented times and it is the responsibility of all influential adults to strive to provide the most positive experience we can for all, not just do things the way we have always done them.

AGHS Athletics Update 7/1/2020

A Message from our Superintendent:

 

The Lucia Mar Board of Education, District Leadership, and School Site Leadership are unanimous in the desire to return to limited, safe athletic conditioning as soon as possible. We all understand the benefit to our students from being outdoors, exercising, and re-establishing routines and goals. Unfortunately, based on guidance from the California Department of Public Health, the County of San Luis Obispo Public Health Department will not allow a return to athletics to SLO County Schools at this time. We respect their decision, and will continue to be in close contact with their offices with the hope of gaining permission to restart as soon as possible. We understand that some Santa Maria area schools have restarted, however, as they are under a different public agency, they have received different guidance. We appreciate your patience as we continue to plan for, and ultimately implement, a safe and beneficial program for our student athletes.

AGHS Athletics Update 6/25/2020

AGHS Athletics Families,

 

Tuesday night our Lucia Mar Unified School District Board of Education unanimously passed (7-0 vote) the proposed LMUSD Return to Activities Guidelines.  There were multiple supportive comments from the board, as well as district cabinet members.  Our district leadership recognizes the need for our students to responsibly return and it showed in their comments, questions, and unanimous vote.  We are proud and happy for their collaborative support!

 

Next step:  We need approval from the SLO County Department of Public Health (CDPH)

 

Superintendent Andy Stenson hand delivered the plan to the CDPH the following day, and has a meeting with Dr. Borenstein scheduled for Friday. This meeting will hopefully provide further information on the status of our return. We will continue to keep you in the loop as we navigate through this process. 

 

Our goal is still to begin on Monday, July 6th!  IF in fact we are approved for return to play there is still A LOT of work ahead to assure we are properly prepared for our return. We have one chance to do this the right way and are determined to responsibly meet with the necessary requirements in order to assure the safety of our students.

 

Thank you for your continued patience as we are all trying to navigate through the unknown & uncertainty of the athletic landscape. We remain hopeful that our future communications will bring good news as we all remain eager to resume activities in a safe & productive environment that will continue to provide our students a path towards success.

AGHS Athletics Update 6/16/2020

Current and Future AGHS Athletics Families, 

 

I hope that this message finds you and your families safe and healthy. Below is an update of our current status regarding the reopening of high school athletics in the Lucia Mar Unified School District.

 

  1. Russell Edwards (NHS AD) and I met with and submitted a "Return to Activity" plan to District Cabinet members on Thursday of last week.  It was a positive meeting with joint collaboration towards creating the safest plan possible.  The work on the plan continues.    
  2. We hope to have the plan zeroed in and ready to present to our school board on June 23rd for their hopeful approval.  
  3. If the school board approves the plan, it will then go to the SLO County Health Department for hopeful approval.  
  4. If we receive County approval we will then spend a week meeting with our various coaching staff to ensure they are well versed in the new guidelines and protocols. We can’t have anyone not facilitating the plan exactly as written. During this time period we will also disseminate the plan, in its entirety, to all of you, as 100% facilitation from each participating family will be needed as well.  Running a safe and successful modified program will take coordination between all of us!  
  5. That timeline puts us at approximately July 6th for a hopeful first day of starting in-person activities.

AGHS Athletics Update 5/21/2020

Current and Future AGHS Athletics Families, 

 

I hope that this email finds you and your families safe, healthy, and sane! I wanted to post directly to our website with pertinent information related to C19 as it relates to AGHS athletics. We realize it is a stressful time with so many unknowns in front of us. First, I am very encouraged for the following reasons.

 

  1. LMUSD leadership is committed to doing what is best for all of our students.
  2. SLO County is now in phase 2 of the pandemic reopening process.
  3. NFHS released suggested guidelines to phase back into athletic activities.
  4. CIF is committed to providing 3 seasons of sport.

 

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

 

Summer - At this point, we do not have any date of return and are following the state, county, CIF, and LMUSD directions. Until we have the ability to meet all the necessary requirements and guidelines AGHS will NOT operate as usual.

 

Fall Sports -  The CIF Commissioners throughout the state of California are determined not to cancel any sport seasons.  Instead, they would prefer to adjust the traditional calendars for all three seasons and modify them as necessary, so that each season (Fall, Winter, Spring) take place in some form.

 

Incoming Freshmen - the AGHS Athletics Department has put together a slideshow for our incoming freshmen. Please see the link below to view & take an interest survey for the 2020-2021 school year.

AGHS Athletic Orientation 2020-2021 

 

AGHS Athletic Registration (FamilyID) - All student athletes planning or interested in participating in a sport next school year must be registered via FamilyID. Please see the instructions below. If you have trouble accessing your account, call the number on the top of the Family ID webpage and they will be able to assist you.

  

  1. Go to the Athletics tab on the high school webpage.  
  2. Click Athletic Clearance on the right hand side.  
  3. Follow the instructions.  

AGHS Athletic Registration (Physical) - At this time we do not expect to host a health screening prior to next school year, thus each family will be responsible to have their student athletes receive a physical. Please scan and email the completed physical form to the athletic director & athletic trainer or drop off in the admin office from 11am-1pm. We understand this process may take a little longer, however is still mandated prior to athletic participation.

Senior Athletic Awards - We will still be honoring our Most Outstanding Senior Athletes, Scholar Athletes and Athletic Scholarship Winners in the senior slideshow to be released in the last week of school.

 

AGHS Athletic Drive Thru - will be held Tuesday (6/2) - Thursday (6/4) from 5-7pm. Spring sport athletes will be dropping off their gear (team uniforms, borrowed equipment, etc)  while the athletic department will be passing out spring senior patches, Most Outstanding Senior Athletes plaques, athletic scholarship winners info, and letterman patches. 

 

  • Seniors who don't return equipment will not receive their diploma. Athletes not graduating will have a hold put on their parking permits in August.

 

  • The Spring Senior Patches are for all seniors that were listed on a spring sport roster when we transitioned to distance learning.  Seniors not on spring sport rosters will NOT receive a patch, as their senior year seasons were not impacted.

CIF Game Prices are predetermined by CIF and will be posted as the teams enter CIF Playoffs.
 
AGHS Athletic Boosters - Support our athletes by joining.  Basic Membership starts at $25.  Contributions help our athletes travel to competitions, purchase sports equipment and uniforms and enhance our program for our athletes.  Please see Teresa Long in the Attendance Office or Athletic Directors Stephen Field or Matt Quijano for more information.
