Elks Most Valuable Student Flyer

Elks Scholarships Now Open

The Elks Most Valuable Student  national scholarship competition is open now!  Deadline is Nov. 12. 

You should also apply for the Elks Teen of the  Month scholarship and be eligible to earn a $2,000 scholarship! Visit the website to  download the fillable application! The sooner you apply, the better your chance. 

Applications are due on the SECOND  FRIDAY EVERY MONTH [e.g. Sept. 11, Oct. 9th, Nov. 13]. You only need to apply ONCE, and any applications not selected will roll over to the next month. See Mrs. O with questions.

PIQ Workshop October 9th

Seniors applying to UC campuses for Fall: Mrs. O will offer a PIQ Workshop on Friday, Oct. 9. This is information taken directly from the UC Counselor Conference and years of practical experience!

Choose 2nd, 3rd, or 5th periods.

Sign up in advance and be sure to clear it with your teacher. You are responsible for making up all missed work.

Military Service Academy Information Night

Interested in attending a military academy after graduation? Congressman Carbajal is hosting a Military Service Academy Information Night from 5:30 - 7 pm on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Vandenberg Space Force Base. You must complete this registration form by Tuesday, Sept. 1st to be allowed on base.

Girls in Aviation Day Event

Girls in Aviation 2026 encourages young women to pursue careers in the aviation industry. This year's event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19th at Oceano Airport.

There will be hands-on activities, conversations with women working in aviation, food trucks, scholarship opportunities, and more. Click here for more information.

Career Exploration Day at Hancock College

Allan Hancock College is hosting the 20th annual Career Exploration Day on Friday, October 2 from 9 am to noon. Juniors and Seniors get priority. Pick up a permission slip from one of the following places:
  • Mrs. O in 208/Career Center [before school, break, lunch, after school until 4 p.m.]
  • Counselors in 514/515 [break and lunch only]
  • Counseling office
Return the SIGNED paper to Mrs. O by THURSDAY, SEPT. 10 in order to attend the field trip. NO LATE PERMISSION SLIPS WILL BE ACCEPTED. No exceptions!!!

Civility Day Essay Contest

For its annual Constitution Month, King David's Masonic Lodge in San Luis Obispo is offering an essay contest for middle and high school students. To enter, high school students need to submit a 350 to 500 word essay on the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence. Specific rules are available here or see Mrs. O in 208.

The deadline to receive essay entries is September 8. The essays will be reviewed by a Committee from the Lodge. There will be a first, second, and third prize - namely gift certificates to Barnes & Noble; $100 for third place, $200 for second place, and $300 for first place.
Interested in a career in aviation? California Aeronautical University will offer an Aspiring Pilot Seminar, 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3 via Zoom.

The seminar will review how flight training works, the FAA medical certificate, the difference between ATP and R-ATP certifications, how to choose the best flight plan for you and more.

If you are interested in marketing, event planning, donor relations, or volunteer coordinating, the 5Cities Homeless Coalition is offering a Youth Apprenticeship Program. Gain real world professional experience in approximately 4-6 hours per week.

ECOSLO Cleanup Event on Sept. 19

ECOSLO Creeks to Coast Cleanup

The annual Creeks to Coast Cleanup will be held this year on Saturday, September 19th at 9 am. You can sign up here for any of the 40 sites (listed from North to South county) to help clean up creeks and coastline:

Last year, over 7,300 pounds of waste was removed from our local waterways. This year's goal is to reach 1,000 volunteers.
United Way Youth Board Opportunity

United Way Youth Board Opportunity

The United Way Youth Board is for 10th–12th graders in SLO County who want real-world
leadership experience. You’ll meet monthly with other students, learn how community
funding decisions are made, and help support local youth programs through hands-on
projects and grant-making. It’s a chance to build skills like teamwork, public speaking, and

Journey of Hope Festival Needs Volunteers

Transitions Mental Health Association is hosting its annual Journey of Hope Festival, a resource fair and community event promoting youth mental health.

Arroyo Grande Parks & Rec Dept. has events throughout the Fall months that require LOTS of volunteers! Starting with the Big Ditch Market Sept. 4, going through the Winter holidays.
